November 2016: Athlete of the Month

Congrats to Andrea Black, our November Athlete of the Month!

She is consistent, works hard, has a great attitude, and gave perhaps one of the funniest Athlete of the Month answers ever.  We adore her… and her cat memes.  Enjoy!

Q. How long have you been at Defiance S&C?

A. Since January 2014.

Q. Where were you born and raised?

A. Palisade, CO. Where the peaches and wine are! And beer! Try the Dirty Hippy from Palisade Brewery, it’s my favorite!

Q. What do you do for work?

A. Radiologic Technologist is the official title . Otherwise it’s just a fancy way for saying I do X-rays and CT scans.

Q. What is your “Spirit Animal?”

A. You wouldn’t think this was a hard question to answer- So I took an online quiz and it said a FOX. Then I remembered that Red Pandas are a thing and they are so freaking adorable! It’s probably neither of those animals. It should probably be a cat because they’re mostly independent, and can be nice, mostly give judgmental stares and are cute little assholes that like to lay where its warm and take naps. Perhaps it’s a mix between all three…

Q. What is your favorite food?

A. Mexican foods. Seriously, at what point is it appropriate to stop eating chips and salsa? And I’ll eat anything smothered in green chili. OH and Margaritas!

Q. What is your favorite type of workout or lift?

A. Partner workouts, EMOMs, Deadlifts, child’s pose, pigeon stretch, and Savasana.

Q. What is your least favorite workout or lift?

A. Wall Balls, Thrusters, Hill sprints, sled pushes and talking myself into getting off the ground half way through a burpee when I’d rather just lay there and give up 🙂 Oh and headcutters..

Q. What were you doing for exercise before you started at Defiance?

A. Going to a 5am workout class at EPIC fitness. Then I started dating a CrossFitter who wouldn’t shut the f*** up about it- now here I am, doing CrossFit and loving it! He was right about something I guess.

Q. What activities do you enjoy doing outside the gym?

A. Hiking, Backpacking trips, traveling, crocheting, binge watching Netflix, enjoying wine, and all around shenanigans with friends and laughing.

Q. How if at all, has Defiance S&C changed your life?

A. I’ve found a new love for working out and working towards goals and seeing progress. I’ve learned a lot about my own strengths and that it’s okay to fail sometimes as long as I keep working hard because I’ll eventually find success in what I’ve been trying to achieve. It makes me want to challenge myself in all aspects of life. Oh and the Nutrition Challenges are awesome and have helped me learn how to eat better and in a sustainable fashion so that I don’t feel like a slug at the gym or lose energy during the day.

Q. How would you describe Defiance and your experiences at Defiance with someone who is interested in trying it out?

A. The best community that I’ve ever been associated with! I was so nervous when I first joined, but I’m so happy that I did. I enjoy coming to the gym and feeling that I’m among friends that continue to encourage each other and work hard together. The trainers are beyond amazing and are awesome at explaining the movements and learning what I’m capable of and pushing me to be better everyday. I’ve met so many awesome people through Defiance and because of Defiance. I love that we all can celebrate each others hard work and watch everyone’s progress. I have to say that any time spent at Defiance is the best part of my day.
