Owner and Trainer

I have had a lifetime of individual based sports and physical labor careers. My adolescence was filled with work based around the ability to use my body in its full capacity to earn a living. Whether it was constructing trails, fighting fire, landscaping, downhill skiing or riding horses, my body needed to operate and perform on a daily basis for me to to earn a paycheck. While I hardly appreciated that fact, the truth about the longevity of “the grind” without proper training or recovery was coming to light. By  mere coincidence I stepped into Glenwood Spring CrossFit which quickly became the best decision of my life. A gym and programming based on measurable, repeatable data, community and the discovery of what is possible vs what I cannot do transformed my mindset, health, body, outlook and career forever.

My philosophy around sport and fitness is that it should provide the participant with longevity, function and an environment to overcome perceived limitations both physical and mental. I am continually blessed with the opportunity to co-own a business with a dear friend and mentor that shares this approach. My clientele is a community unparalleled by another; the exact one that changed my life personally. I am driven to coach because of its ability to be a piece of the map in a client’s quest for lifelong positive change. It is my job to provide a client with tools for better functionality, movement patterns, strength tactics, endurance and metabolic conditioning, execution, discipline, nutrition, and mindset strategies and then witness and help hone the details as they make it their own.

I am a CF Level 2 Trainer in pursuit of my L3, Precision Nutrition Coach and former intercollegiate equestrian athlete for St. Lawrence University and assistant coach at a small university in New Hampshire after graduation. I have competed and finished ultra endurance running events as well as your typical high school athletics of soccer, skiing, track and field, cross-country skiing, and indoor soccer.
I enjoyed many years as a ranch manager and assistant trainer working with horses before training and then purchasing Defiance Strength & Conditioning.

I am excited for the future of Defiance Strength & Conditioning!  I believe that fitness and therefore DSC should always be evolving around the science of sport and new findings in human biology and physiology. Fitness should continue to be fun, functional and add to the social, physical and mental aspects of your life.

Deanna Spracher

Owner and Trainer

I have been passionate about sport, fitness and health for as long as I can remember.  This passion all began at the age of 5 when I was enrolled in my first gymnastics class.  At a young age, I learned the importance of diet and exercise through the sport of gymnastics.  I may not have understood at the time, but gymnastics also taught me that diet and exercise can be fun.  Little did I know that this would become my passion in life and that I would get the opportunity to make this passion my "occupation."

I can’t remember a day in my life without fitness.  I was a 3 sport athlete in high school, played intramural sports in college, and found CrossFit after graduating college.  After my first CrossFit class; yes I was using a blue band for pull ups and jumping to a 16” box, I knew this was the career that I wanted to pursue.

I graduated from University of Colorado with a degree in Integrative Physiology (Kineseology) and “the plan” was to go to grad school and become a Physical Therapist.  After volunteering many many hours in PT clinics I knew I was trying to convince myself that was indeed the career path I still wanted to pursue.  Once I attended my first CrossFit class in January of 2010 I knew I know longer wanted to “convince” myself that PT was for me.  I was sick of stretching and performing modalities on individuals in an office all day long.  Instead, I realized I wanted to be on the other end of this spectrum.  I wanted to be alongside individuals, moving with them and teaching them proper movement patterns in order prevent them from needing surgery and physical therapy.

After that first class I decided to get my level 1 certification and started teaching in June of 2010.  I have been involved in the industry since then, training at 2 different locations in the Roaring Fork Valley and now co-owning Defiance Strength and Conditioning with my best friend.  I am extremely grateful that my “job” is my passion and that I get to share this passion with my best friend and our incredible community.  Not a day goes by that I feel like I “have” to go to work.  I am so grateful that I get to share my passion for health and fitness with some of the most incredible individuals I have ever met.

My time in sports and fitness goes back to my years as a kid growing up with two older brothers.  Throughout the years I've played baseball, basketball, soccer and a little bit of everything else.  Being consistently active is a crucial part of my well-being as I find that I grow restless when I am not doing something to better my physical capability.  I am fully convinced that my physical output leads to a healthy mind and overall a healthy and happy lifestyle.

In CrossFit, I see the potential of endless progression.  Upon achieving a certain goal, I find that there is always another goal to reach or something new to strive toward.  There is no top and there is no "end goal."  My ambition for CrossFit keeps me constantly motivated to reach different goals and overcome new challenges.

As a coach, my goal is to help you achieve the goals that you, as an individual, are journeying toward.  Utilizing and sharing the knowledge that I have acquired as both a CrossFit athlete and trainer in order to teach others and help them reach their potential is what makes my job as a trainer truly enjoyable and rewarding.  I am committed to seeing you walk out of Defiance Strength and Conditioning a healthier and happier version of yourself than when you walked through the door.

Christine Smalley

Trainer

From the moment I stepped into the gym, 6 and a half years ago, I was hooked on Crossfit. I love the community, the hard workouts, and the challenges that come with learning new skills.  With two boys, a busy husband, grad school, and teaching high school, these fast and dirty workouts have become my way to embrace athleticism, myself, and my passion for growth.

Coaching Crossfit has been the biggest gift. I can share my love for fitness and love watching people progress. I love teaching athletes of all abilities by encouraging them to make choices that push themselves out of their comfort zones in order to grow.

Matt Cova

Trainer and Olympic Lifting Coach

Matt’s childhood was active and filled with sports. Physical fitness was a given and maintained throughout the early years. One year of college changed all of that. After ballooning up to 250 pounds in 9 short months, something had to change. Many years later and he is still on the journey toward optimal health and fitness. In 2008, he started dabbling in “CrossFit” workouts and high intensity training while cross-training for climbing and skiing adventures. The immediate benefits were obvious and he was convinced. In 2012 he moved to Glenwood Springs and started attending GSCF, where he finally understood the benefits of training in a gym rather than on a school playground.
